The Gaval of the Ganges, or Gharial, belongs to the family of crocodilians, it is easily recognizable by its relatively long and narrow jaw. The Gharial can measure up to 20 feet long and weigh 2200 pounds, it's almost as big as the Nile crocodile! It feeds exclusively on fish, which it can hold firmly between its jaws thanks to fine and pointed teeth. Today the Gharial is a species threatened with extinction from destruction of its habitat, with drainage of wetlands by man, but also deforestation of surrounding forests.
